I was searching the internet for some Christmas songs as a habit every year on the occasion and stumbled on Gregorian chanting the season’s songs and that was amazing. Then I was totally overwhelmed by their versions of Beatles’s songs. For many days since that moment, I had been mesmerized by familiar old melodies showing another beauty.
My patient readers have already known that I’m a big fan of the Beatles. I grew up with their music and in my heart, no other band can replace. Many singers have so far covered Beatles’s songs as a tribute to the best-known band; some were successful, some weren’t and this time Gregorian did just that and they were far more successful. Who can imagine Beatles’s song are chanted and chanted so well. To be frank, I have no doubt about their success because Beatles’s melodies, just like Queen’s, are so symphonic. Bad artists try to cover others in the same way, talented ones make songs different from the originals and Gregorian did the latter. Those who are loyal to the Beatles may at first find the melodies sound different, steady, or even monotonous but they will soon be captivated by that distinct and creative style.
Gregorian is not well known in Vietnam at present. I remember checking out the only Gregorian album on display in a music store while the young owner stole a glance at me asking “You listen to that?” He admitted that CDs of that type were intended for foreign tourists. Gregorian is a German band. It’s said that their albums are often made part in the studio and part in candle-lit churches to eliminate the “cold and technical studio atmosphere,” as the band leader said.
If you are also crazy about the Beatles, then give it a try.
