As always, the Perfume River in Hue is lit up every year on the occasion of Phat Dan with the seven giant lotuses. And this year, with lanterns too representing the colors of the Buddhist flag.

Hue City is step by step known as a place for street art. Good to see art is by the community and for the populace...

Cách đây mười mấy năm, lần đầu tiên nhìn thấy những bức tượng người ở New York đã để lại trong tôi một ấn tượng thú vị thật khó quên và giờ đây, loại nghệ thuật công cộng độc đáo này đã xuất hiện trong các Festival ở Huế... Cảm xúc vẫn như xưa, vẫn hứng khởi và luôn khâm phục sức chịu đựng phi thường của các nghệ sĩ. Chỉ có những người yêu nghệ thuật đích thực mới làm được như thế...

Picture Talks (15): Gánh đậu hũ xứ Huế

  Trong khi dọn dẹp lại laptop, thấy mấy bức ảnh chụp gánh đậu hũ xứ Huế vẫn còn giữ nguyên nét xưa nên post lên cho mọi người xem. Nhớ lần đi Đà Lạt, ăn đậu hũ ở thác Cam Ly, nhìn hũ đậu đã được thay bằng cái xô nhựa màu sắc sặc sỡ mà thấy mất ngon. (Thật ra cảm giác của tôi lúc ấy là shocked, vì trong tưởng tượng của tôi, chưa bao giờ có hình ảnh ấy).

  May mà ở Huế, hình ảnh ấy vẫn còn nguyên vẹn...

  Giải thích thêm cho những ai không còn được thấy cảnh này. Cái tủ nhỏ bằng gỗ có nhiều tầng đựng chén muỗng, các thứ phụ trợ như đường, chanh... và thau nước rửa. Đậu hũ được chứa trong cái ghè bằng dất nung màu nâu, đã bị lớp bọc bên ngoài che khuất. Lớp vỏ bọc tự chế này là để giữ nóng cho đậu hũ bên trong. Nếu món này ở trong Nam ngoài Bắc ăn với nước đường và gừng, thậm chí nghe nói có khi còn thêm đá lạnh và nước cốt dừa như ở trong Nam, thì ở Huế vẫn trung thành với phong cách đơn giản và chân phương là đường cát trắng và vài giọt chanh...

The above photos  in Nha tho Duc Ba (Notre Dame Cathedral) in Saigon stand in total contrast to the following from Dong Chua Cuu The in Hue. While Notre Dame evokes the classical beauty, Dong Chua Cuu The lends an air of modernity. And we owe all that to stained glass.

Decoration in churches is usually simple and stained glass is very often employed.

This is what Wikipedia writes about stained glass:

“As a material, stained glass is glass that has been coloured by adding metallic salts during its manufacture. The coloured glass is crafted into stained glass windows in which small pieces of glass are arranged to form patterns or pictures, held together (traditionally) by strips of lead and supported by a rigid frame. Painted details and yellow stain are often used to enhance the design. The term stained glass is also applied to windows in which the colours have been painted onto the glass and then fused to the glass in a kiln.”

Where Marble Talks

If you travel to Da Nang from Hue in tourist coaches such as Sinh Cafe or Hanh Cafe, sure you'll stop at a place called "sculpture village" right at the entrance of the city. It's like a gallery in the open air where hundreds of marble statues are displayed. Though known as Non Nuoc marble statues, the sculptures are now made of marble from elsewhere to keep the Ngu Hanh Son (Five Mountains,) a beauty spot of Da Nang, from being over exploited.

  

 

 

The collection of statues is an interesting mix.

Picture Talks (11): Celadon Palace Hotel (Part I)

Last night we went to the café bar in Celadon Palace, a new 5-star hotel in Hue. Don’t think we’re tempted by luxury; just because we wanted to take the privilege of knowing some people there who were willing to offer us a tour. We were curious to see the inside of this brand-new hotel and enjoy the music played by a band from the Philippines. Remember that you can click on each pix to see its full size version.

Picture Talks (10): Lotus Pond

If you are an Impressionist Art lover, it is very likely that you have seen Monet’s series of water lily paintings. Some of those paintings are now on display at a commanding place at Boston Museum of Fine Arts and are among the museum’s treasures. Monet painted the lily ponds in his house and garden in the village of Giverny, 80 km from Paris.

But the following are lotuses, but not water lilies. I took the pictures at Dong Khanh Tomb. Though it’s just a bit further from well-visited Tu Duc Tomb, I admit it’s my first time there. The tomb was almost empty except for just a few wandering tourists due to the restoration which was taking place. Remember to click on each pic to see its larger version.

It’s getting late in the afternoon and the sun was trying to light up the pond the last  time before dying. The pond bathing in the gleam became even more splendid from the shade.

Picture Talks (9): Hue City from Above

  We had a morning buffet yesterday on the 11th floor of the Camellia Hotel. The city from there looked neat and charming. In the picture is the Imperial and Morin Hotels.

It's rare in Hue in wintertime when the sun suddenly appeared after days of rain. Truong Tien Bridge was visible in spite of the gray vapor coat that covered the city.

Picture Talks (8): A Touch of Fall

Who says Hue has no fall? I caught this sight the other day on Ly Thuong Kiet St. Rare in a tropical evergreen country. Click on each photo to see its larger version.

And Ngo Quyen Street, too. The pity is such a beautiful street has no sidewalks.

Nothing is wrong with this beautiful slogan, which is woven by tens of flower pots. But its location is. Don't you see it blocks the majestic view of the Flag Tower? Tourists crossing Phu Xuan Bridge and taking the left turn are often overwhelmed with the immense and neat square in front of the flag pole, but the misplaced slogan ruins it all. It's strange that the same thing happens again and again every time there is a celebration but nobody notices. And Hue is not short of space for things like that at all. I saw the same thing at Khai Dinh Tomb. Slogans help to beautify sights, absolutely not the opposite.

Picture Talks (7): "Green, Clean and Beautiful"

On the way home after a stroll, I came across these women diligently tending the flowers in a park alongside the Perfume River. As their blue uniform indicated, they came from Hue Urban Environment Company, which is responsible for, among others, taking care of the trees in the city. If you click on each photo, you'll see its full-size version.

Hue has been known for the many titles such as “the City of Poetry”, the City of Romance”, “the City of Festivals,” and the like, but the title “Green, Clean and Beautiful” is by far the most significant because, more than anything else, it ensures the quality of life.

And all that depends on these hard-working people.

Picture Talk (6): Con Kênh Xanh Xanh

I had an afternoon to spend in Phu My Hung, the new face of Saigon. Apart from the  beauty of discipline and uniformity, Phu My Hung was full of plants and flowers. It's this man-made canal running along a boulevard, said to be modeled after the one in San Franciso, that subdued the harsh sun in the South. Tôi có gần trọn một buổi chiều lang thang ở Phú Mỹ Hưng, khu phố mới của Sài Gòn.  PMH có vẻ đẹp kỷ luật của những khu nhà được thiết kế đồng nhất, phá đi cái thói quen vị kỷ của những khu dân cư thường thấy ở Việt Nam.
Nhưng PMH còn có một vẻ đẹp khác, vẻ đẹp của cây cỏ. Buổi trưa hầm hập cái nắng  chói chang của phương Nam bỗng như dịu hẳn lại trong bóng râm hoa lá và mặt nước trong xanh, và chính con kênh xinh xinh này đã đem lại cho khách bộ hành là tôi một cảm giác thư thái và yên bình. Và những cánh hoa dâm bụt nữa, soi bóng bên mặt nước phẳng lặng, ai dám chê loài hoa này quê mùa?

Picture Talks (5): Tra Que Herbs

These photos were taken while we were visiting our relatives at a hamlet near the ancient town of Hoi An. At the entrance to the town, right after crossing a bridge, take the right and you will definitely see Tra Que Village, well known for growing excellent fresh herbs with quite a distinctive aroma, probably due to the appropriate soil. For those who were born and grown up in the city like me, the sight is really a treat. As always, click on each photo to see its full size version.

It's said that the village has recently become a destination for tourists who want to see how the locals grow vegetables.

If you ever go there, remember to bring back some herbs, really good and more important, they are ORGANIC!

Picture Talks (4): Scene from Classroom

Hue College of Foreign Languages (HCFL) has recently moved to the new campus in the once-deserted area of the city, not very far from the centre, though.

It will be a long long way to go before the whole plan is fulfilled. As of now, two out of five buildings have been finished to host students and the teaching staff; one serves as the administration building and the other is for classrooms.

HCFL and another college awake the area. Unfortunately, the two tiny roads leading to the campuses have begun to congest at rush hours and are now in terrible condition, just a short time after the campuses were put into operation. Too bad such congestion is becoming the norm. Though the city has planned to build bigger streets to the campuses, it is just a plan, resulting in terrible traffic jams every morning and afternoon. As commonsense is, the streets leading to the campuses must have been constructed long before the campuses themselves.

This is the scene from the classroom where I teach. Every morning I notice a cow and water buffalo herdman take his cattle there and sit leisurely smoking at the well while his animals are grazing. I find this bucolic scene as fascinating as the lessons and am afraid that some day it may disappear for good since the area is changing and changing very fast. Who knows this might be one of the last pics of the sence.

Picture Talks (3): Hàng rào có hoa...

Nhớ hồi ở Mỹ, tôi mê mẩn những chiếc hàng rào gỗ sơn trắng kết bằng những thanh gỗ vót nhọn một đầu chạy dài quanh mỗi căn nhà mênh mông ở ngoại ô. Những chiếc cọc đơn sơ mà ngăn nắp, tinh tươm, gợi duyên đồng quê giản dị. Kiểu hàng rào như thế có rất nhiều ở xứ lạnh và khô nhưng có vẻ không hợp lắm ở vùng khí hậu ẩm ướt như Việt Nam vì do làm bằng chất liệu gỗ, lại sơn trắng nữa nên có thể bị tàn phá rất nhanh, nếu không thì cũng dễ bị vấy bẩn khi mùa mưa đến.

Vậy nên tôi đã bất ngờ đến xúc động khi tình cờ thấy lại kiểu hàng rào này ở phố núi Đà Lạt bao quanh một ngôi nhà xinh xắn ở lưng chừng con dốc lên ga xe lửa. Chiếc hàng rào quen thuộc ấy đã trở nên duyên dáng gấp bội khi làm nơi tựa cho những cánh hoa tím hồng.

Cám ơn những chiếc hàng-rào-có-hoa xinh xắn làm chậm lại bước chân du khách vội vàng. Những chiếc hàng rào ngăn-mà-không-cách...

Đột nhiên lại nhớ một tạp bút của Đỗ Trung Quân Đi đâu mà vội bướm vàng ơi...

This is what my house looked like many a year ago. At the time, the houses in my alleyway were numbered. Most of them were surrounded by large and lush gardens. The air was fresh, the houses were beautiful and the people were friendly. Unlike other children who might be frightened of being at home alone, I enjoyed the quietness in the morning when people were at work and other children at school. I loved the feeling of having the whole house to myself.

Today, even with a better camera, I haven’t been able to take a better picture of the house simply because the buildings block its panoramic view. The short alley is now crowded with multi-story mini hotels and guest houses. People knocked down their large garden houses, sold half of the land and rebuilt their houses on the other half. (I remember D once asked me why people in Vietnam liked building their houses narrow and high.) Tourists of all types pass to and fro, vehicles roar now and then. My neighborhood look more prosperous but my precious quiet moments have gone.

Không giống những đứa trẻ khác thường hay sợ ở nhà một mình, tôi nhớ mình thích lắm những lúc như thế. Cảm thấy như mình là ông chủ nhỏ, tự do làm những gì mình muốn, dù thật tình chẳng ai cấm đoán gì. Ở nhà một mình trong một ngôi nhà yên tĩnh và thênh thang, cậu bé là tôi lúc ấy cảm thấy rất thú vị. Tôi mở tung các cửa sổ và cửa lớn cho nắng ùa vào, đôi khi bật nhạc nhè nhẹ. Và tôi yêu những buổi sáng như thế, khi mọi người đã đi làm, trẻ con đi học. Ngày ấy, buổi sáng trong con hẽm cụt của tôi yên ắng kỳ lạ. Chỉ có tiếng chim hót và lá cây xào xạc trong những khu vườn im mát. Có vẻ như những phút giây ngà ngọc đó đã ăn sâu vào tâm hồn tôi với một ấn tượng mạnh đến nỗi cho đến tận nay, dù cho vật đổi sao dời, tôi vẫn thích tìm đến những nơi yên ả.

Ngày ấy xa rồi, xa thật xa. Những thứ đơn giản là thế có vẻ như đã trở thành xa xỉ. Từ ngày khách sạn, nhà khách thi nhau mọc lên trong con hẽm nhỏ, du khách đi lại ngênh ngang, xe máy gầm rú mỗi buổi sáng khi đoàn xe thồ đến chở khách đi thăm thú đó đây. Có vẻ như con hẽm ngày càng chật chội vì số lượng nhà ngày càng nhiều. Những khu vườn được chia cắt ra để xây nhà cao tầng. Cây cối biến mất, những ngôi nhà cao lên và hẹp đi. Và tôi mất đi một khoảng trời. Mất luôn thói quen dậy sớm học bài hay đọc sách trong vườn. Dù ngôi nhà của tôi không thay đổi nhiều, nhưng không còn nữa dãy hàng rào thắp lên những chùm tigôn “tim vỡ” màu hồng phấn và bìm bịp tím biếc. Không còn lớp móng nhà xây bằng đá tảng chạy quanh nhà. Không còn cây tùng thẳng đứng hiên ngang chính giữa và cây dừa cao vút vươn lên giữa bệ cỏ xanh non...
