Đường Phượng Bay đường nào?

" Em đi về cầu mưa ướt áo, đường phượng bay mù không lối vào, hàng cây lá xanh gần với nhau..." (Mưa hồng - Trịnh Công Sơn)

    Tôi có người chị cousin ở Mỹ, có lẽ vì nghe kể hoặc thường hát "đường phượng bay mù không lối vào" của Trịnh, cứ dặn tôi lúc nào về lại Huế, nhớ chụp cho chị ấy xem bức ảnh con đường có cái tên lãng mạn ấy. Vậy mà tôi cứ lần lữa, lần lữa mãi cho đến nay, bởi vì thật ra ngay cả tôi, một người sống ở Huế, cũng chẳng dám nói chắc đường Phượng Bay của Trịnh là đường nào...

   Theo nhiều người, (và cho đến nay vẫn mặc định như thế,) đó là con đường Đoàn Thị Điểm tuyệt đẹp trong thành nội. Nếu bạn vào thành qua cửa Ngăn, rẽ phải rồi rẽ trái thì đó chính là con đường đang nói. Con đường ấy đẹp thật, một bên là bờ tường thành u tịch, bỗng nổi bật lên trong màu xanh mướt dịu dàng của cây cỏ và mặt nước, hai hàng cây khum khum chụm đầu vào nhau che một con đường nhỏ nhắn, lúc nào cũng râm mát. Những ngày đông, con đường có vẻ cô liêu nhưng không hề buồn vì màu xanh đằm thắm trãi dài; những ngày hè, mặt đường lấp lánh vui tươi những bông hoa nắng nhảy múa. Ai đi trên con đường này cũng xuýt xoa. Một người quen có lần hỏi sao rất hay thấy tôi đi trên con đường đó. Đúng vậy. Mỗi khi có dịp, tôi lại thích đi qua con đường này mà đôi khi chẳng để làm gì cả, đơn giản chỉ vì nó quá đẹp. Còn đường ấy xứng đáng được ngợi ca. Nhưng nếu nói đó là đường Phượng Bay thì hình như chưa ổn vì con đường này hầu như không có phượng mà toàn là những cây muối.  Thật ra thì cũng thấp thoáng vài bóng phượng nhưng đó là những cây rãi rác trong các công sở gần đó mà thôi. Mà hình như theo sách vở ghi lại,  từ thời mà ở Huế cây cối được trồng có quy hoạch hẳn hoi, mỗi con đường một loài cây, thì đó là con đường trồng toàn muối rồi, chứ chưa khi nào là đường phượng cả...

    Còn nếu đó là một con đường trồng thuần nhất một loài phượng thì đường Lê Duẩn chạy ngang Cột cờ mới đúng. Đây cũng là một con đường đẹp khác của Huế với hai hàng phượng đều tăm tắp, hoa rực rỡ suốt mùa hè, có năm đồng loạt, có năm luân phiên nhau nở. Con đường này là lối dẫn vào thành phố và đó và niềm tự hào của Huế, nó như báo hiệu cho khách đến Huế bằng đường bộ rằng bạn sắp vào trung tâm của một thành phố  xanh và yên bình. Con đường chạy qua nhiều công trình cổ, một bên là dòng sông tĩnh lặng, một bên là những di tích vàng son một thời. Lại những khoảng xanh của công viên với một vườn mai vàng mới được gầy dựng thêm sau này, dù chưa lần nào thấy nở hoa đồng loạt. Thế nhưng hiện tại, đường Lê Duẩn đã là một con đườn khá rộng nên hàng cây lá không "xanh gần với nhau" được như trong lời bài hát. Nếu đây đúng là đường phượng bay của Trịnh thì chắc ngày ấy chỉ là một con đường hẹp.

     Mà ngẫm lại, việc đi tìm con đường Phượng Bay ở Huế cũng chỉ là để thõa mãn trí tò mò vốn có của người đời mà thôi chứ nếu nói theo kiểu của Lỗ Tấn "Trên thế gian vốn dĩ không có đường. Người ta đi mãi thì thành đường mà thôi." thì chuyện xác định một con đường cụ thể thật ra chẳng còn cần thiết nữa. Mà quả vậy, trong Mưa Hồng, Trịnh Công Sơn cũng không hề viết hoa hai chữ phượng bay,và vì thế, theo tôi, đó có thể là bất cứ con đường nào, miễn nó đẹp, có lá phượng bay bay, có sương mù giăng lối, có hai hàng cây xanh gần với nhau, thế thôi. Đó là con đường trong tâm tưởng và trong kỷ niệm.  Còn chuyện tại sao lại là Đoàn Thị Điểm mà không phải một con đường nào khác thì suy ra rằng, con người ta, thường khi đã yêu mến một cái gì, thì gán cho nó những gì tốt đẹp nhất...

Quoc Tu Giam in Hue

Since a previous entry was about Văn Miếu, it would be more complete to mention Quốc Tử Giám in Hue, too. If you click on each pix, you'll see its full-sized version.

Two major functions of the Temple of Letters was to worship Confucius whose philosophy was avidly appreciated by ancient Vietnamese including Vietnamese emperors and to honor those who got the highest academic degrees of the time. Because of this, Văn Miếu and Quốc Tử Giám, (equivalent to a national university today,) often coupled together. However due to its inconvenient location far away from the center and the Citadel, in 1908, Duy Tân had Quốc Tử Giám move to its present site in the Imperial City leaving Văn Miếu on the spot.

Today if visitors enter the Imperial City through Thượng Tứ Gate, they will see toward the left a walled area, spacious and square in shape and it’s the place. Don’t be confused to see giant death-evoking tanks on display on campus. They are the remains of a museum during the time when the relic was misused...

In the center of campus is a beautiful structure of two floors named Di Luân Đường. The lower level served as the lecture hall and the upper level was for worshiping Confucius. The buildings on both sides were the classrooms and the dorms. Behind Di Luân Đường was the library named Tàng Thơ Viện. Both Di Luân Đường and Tàng Thơ Viện had orriginally belonged to Bảo Định, a very beautiful palace of the Nguyen Dynasty. The fact that the most beautiful palace was reserved for books acknowledged the importance of libraries in a university. However, this palace was afterward changed into Khai Dinh Musee and now it is housing Bảo tàng Mỹ thuật Cung đình Huế (Museum of Royal Arts.)

Van Mieu Hue

I remember in a televised contest some time ago, a contestant was laughed at by the MC when she said Van Mieu, The Temple of Letters, is in Hue in response to the question "Where is Van Mieu?" Though hers was not the expected answer and she lost credits by that, it was the MC himself who was wrong because there's, in fact, a temple of letters in the ancient capital of Hue besides the one in Ha Noi.

 

Van Mieu Hue, (better known to the locals as Van Thanh) is currently located on a low hill, just a stone's throw from Thien Mu Pagoda. From the pagoda, look further ahead on the right then you will see the gate of the temple. Thanks to its elevation, standing at Van Mieu, one can have a very nice view with mountains and the calm river in front.

Nguyen Kings and ancient Vietnamese people in general worshiped Confucius and his philosophy. Van Mieu was set up in honor of him. As normal was, Quoc Tu Giam, (somewhat like a university today,) was placed there on campus of the temple too before being moved to its present site in the Imperial City, next to the Citadel. At its best, there were altogether more than 50 structures, big and small. Since Minh Mang's time, stone steles on which the names of the people who passed the Hoi examinations and earned the highest academic degree at the time were inscribed, had been added. Though not much left today due to wars and nature, the most crucial things _ the 32 stone steles _ miraculously remain intact.

The steles serve as an invaluable source of information for historians and researchers and the whole temple demonstrates Vietnamese people's appreciation for learning and knowledge...

 

Một cuốn sách cho Huế

Có lần trên blog này, tôi nhận được một lời “trách” là tại sao có quá ít bài giới thiệu sách trong khi vẫn bảo mình là người rất yêu sách và đọc sách nhiều. Nhận xét đó không sai. Thật ra, lý do là thế này. Tôi đọc nhiều, hiện vẫn đi nhà sách đều đặn, nhưng khổ nỗi, lại là một người đọc “khó tính”, khá cầu toàn và kỹ lưỡng. Tôi có thói quen phải đọc đi đọc lại một cuốn sách vài lần rồi mới dám đưa ra nhận xét. Khổ nỗi, đôi khi thấy hài lòng phần này nhưng lại không thích phần kia, thế là cứ lần lữa, đợi chờ. Thôi thì hãy tập cách chấp nhận sự tương đối vậy.

Những ngày này, Huế đang gấp rút chuẩn bị cho Festival 2010 và tôi chợt nhớ đến một tập sách viết về Huế xuất bản đã khá lâu nhưng nếu muốn tìm hiểu về Huế và văn hóa xứ này thì đó là cuốn rất đáng đọc. Văn hóa Huế tinh tế và đa dạng lắm, có khi đi hết cả một đời người vẫn không hiểu hết được. Cá nhân tôi, là người Huế, vẫn không dám chắc mình hiểu hết, hiểu cặn kẻ về miền đất này, đôi khi vẫn “bí” khi được hỏi. Tượng đài Sông Hương là dành cho những người con của Huế và những ai nặng nợ với chốn này… Tôi biết, người yêu Huế nhiều lắm mà người không cảm tình với nó cũng không ít. Nhưng theo tôi, trước khi đưa ra nhận xét về một vùng đất thì cũng nên tự hỏi mình đã hiểu hết về nó chưa. Một thành phố thâm trầm, một nền văn hóa tinh tế và đậm đặc tính tâm linh như văn hóa Huế thì hiểu được nó chẳng đơn giản chút nào…

Tượng đài Sông Hương gồm những tạp bút, bút ký của những nhà văn, nhà thơ, nhà báo khá quen thuộc thường hay viết về Huế, người gốc Huế có mà người không phải gốc Huế cũng có. Những bài viết về nhiều đề tài khác nhau, văn phong cũng rất đa dạng, nhưng có một điểm chung là các tác giả đều có một tình yêu đặc biệt với Huế. Nếu xét về bố cục tổng thể thì đúng là không đều tay và ít nhất quán về phong cách, cũng là điểm cần thông cảm mà bỏ qua đối với một cuốn sách mang tính sưu tập.

Và theo thói quen cố hữu, tôi hay chọn cho riêng mình một bài hát hay nhất khi lần đầu thưởng thức một đĩa hát mới và nếu cũng làm như thế với cuốn sách này thì tôi xin được chọn bài Trái cấm vườn nhà tôi của Nguyễn Hữu Thông. Câu chuyện về cây ổi dành cho chim trong gia đình tác giả đặt ra một vấn đề mà có thể nhiều người ủng hộ nhiệt liệt, nhưng cũng có người phản đối gắt gao. Dù sao, bài viết đã lý giải một tính cách Huế không hề trộn lẫn và giúp những ai muốn tìm hiếu triết lý sâu xa của tâm hồn Huế bỗng thấy sáng tỏ một vấn đề.

Tôi thích bài viết này cũng bởi tìm thấy bóng hình của gia đình mình trong đó. Nhà tôi chưa hẳn là nhà vườn tiêu biểu của Huế nhưng có những rẻo đất nhỏ bao quanh, không rộng nhưng trước đây vẫn có khá nhiều cây; ngoài các loài hoa và cây cảnh là những cây ăn trái như khế, ổi, mận, sa-bô-chê, táo, v.v. tất cả đều là những giống chọn lọc. Ổi xá lị căng tròn xanh mơn mởn, giòn tan và ít hột, mận thì đỏ au và đặc ruột đến nỗi phải dùng dao cắt chứ không thể bẻ được bằng tay, khế thì ngọt thanh, vàng ươm và căng tròn không một vết nhăn. Nhà tôi vốn ít người nên mùa nào thức ấy, cây trái treo lủng lẳng trên cây ăn chẳng hết. Dù vậy, rất ít khi me tôi gọi người đến bán như vài nhà vườn vẫn làm. Và lý do đưa ra là thấy trái đẹp quá không nỡ hái, cứ muốn để trên cây cho đẹp, khi có khách đến chơi thì hái tặng cho họ một vài quả cho vui. Đó cũng là cái lãng mạn kiểu Huế. Người ta bảo, vườn Huế khác vườn trong Nam ở chỗ vườn Huế không hề gắn với khái niệm kinh tế là vì thế.

Trong các giờ dạy về văn hóa của tôi, bao giờ cũng có đề tài gia đình và hẳn nhiên trong đó có bàn về việc nuôi dạy và giáo dục trẻ nhỏ. Những quan niệm nuôi dạy con cái trái ngược giữa phương Đông và phương Tây luôn thu hút sự quan tâm. Bao giờ cũng vậy, những cái mới, cái lạ đều được ủng hộ nhiệt tình, có lẽ vì đó là những khái niệm nói theo tiếng Anh là “mở mắt” (eye-opening). Thế nhưng, khi đọc Trái cấm vườn nhà tôi, người ủng hộ cái mới, cái lạ lại như tái phát hiện một khía cạnh khác, một cách nhìn khác về một điều tưởng như là cũ, là lạc hậu, là lỗi thời. Cái quy định của người cha trong bài viết về cây ổi dành cho chim, không cho phép bất cứ đứa con nào đụng vào nghe có vẻ vô lý, thậm chí kỳ quặt với những người xứ khác, vốn sống trong một môi trường ít khắt khe hơn về kỷ luật gia đình. Với những ai ủng hộ thì quy định đó là một lằn ranh phải có mà nếu vượt qua nó thì kỷ luật không còn. Cái lằn ranh đó, bó gọn trong một gia đình, là một quy định phải có để giáo dục con cái và gìn giữ nền tảng gia đình. Cũng cái lằn ranh đó, suy rộng ra, là kỷ cương xã hội mà thiếu nó thì xã hội sẽ bấn loạn. Đối với phe chống đối, cho mình thuộc nhóm “cách tân” thì lằn ranh đó là biểu tượng của sự giới hạn, sự mất tự do và việc tồn tại của nó là một “cái gai” kìm hãm sự phát triển của xã hội. Thế nhưng, dù ủng hộ hay phản đối, tán thành hay chỉ trích, thậm chí giữ vị trí trung dung thì lằn ranh đó vẫn cứ tồn tại như nó vốn có…

Ngoài bài viết này ra, Tượng đài sông Hương còn có nhiều bài đáng đọc khác. Hoàng Phủ Ngọc Tường tinh tế phát hiện ra một Miền cỏ thơm gợi nhắc tư tưởng “Hoa thường hay héo cỏ thường tươi” của Nguyễn Trãi; Thái Kim Lan diễn tả rất thực tính cách “con sông dùng dằng con sông không chảy” của con người xứ này trong Nửa chuyến về Tết và một vài bài viết hay khác. Thật tình, cũng có một vài bài hơi nhạt, thế nhưng gộp chung, tập sách vẫn tạo nên bức tranh văn hóa Huế đầy màu sắc mà biết đâu có người đọc xong cũng à lên thú vị như tôi đã từng…

  We had a morning buffet yesterday on the 11th floor of the Camellia Hotel. The city from there looked neat and charming. In the picture is the Imperial and Morin Hotels.

It's rare in Hue in wintertime when the sun suddenly appeared after days of rain. Truong Tien Bridge was visible in spite of the gray vapor coat that covered the city.

Thanh Tan Spa

In a previous post, I wrote about My An Hot Spring. Yet, there is still another of this sort in the outskirts of Hue, about 13 km from the center, and that’s Thanh Tan Mineral Hot Spring. I visited the spa the first time a long time ago and recently I went there again with my brother’s family from the US coming home for a visit. We started at noon but fortunately the March sun was not very harsh. We rented a car, large enough for 11 of us. The car ran along the beautiful tree-bordered street of Le Duan and turned right just before the railway bridge. We kept heading until we saw An Lo Bridge, then we took the left after crossing the bridge. The road dotted with small cottages here and there led us to the end to see the brown gate of the spa stretching out in welcome. After buying the tickets at the gate, we entered the spa, which was actually a large garden with flowers plants and fruit trees. The presence of thanh trà trees reminded us that we were in Hue.

We sat around a table under a canopy to rest a little bit, leisurely enjoying the fruits and snacks that we brought with us before dipping out bodies into the hot water. Thanh Tan and My An both offer natural hot mineral water, but they differ in that My An water contains sulphur while Thanh Tan doesn’t. So if you aren’t comfortable with the smell, then Thanh Tan is for you. Though Thanh Tan does have pools as My An, the way it’s designed is more nature friendly. The water is led directly from the source in a long man-made creek winding its way throughout the garden. It is so hot at the source that you can see smokes floating from it. The water is less hot further down. So if it’s your first time, start at a place down the creek where the water is just lukewarm and move step by step upward until you feel the right temperature. The interesting thing about Thanh Tan is wherever you are, you are close to nature, feel like you are in a creek in the wood. Don’t be surprised if you hear the sound of insects some time. It’s also a good idea to alternate between hot and warm water by moving up and down the creek. For a change, you can swim in the cool water pools with slides, fountains, and the like for children. There is also a small pool with a wave-maker, but I don’t recommend it because is too shallow and the waves lack necessary strength. Thuan An Beach is not very far anyway…

When we came, extra construction is on the way. Sure it’ll be different when you are there. There is also a resto with a very rustic look, too but we had only one afternoon there and therefore, had too hurry home in the city before it was dark.

Our trip ended with the dinner at Pho Saigon Resto in the city instead.

Nhan sắc mùa hạ Huế

Mùa hè ở Huế có khi nóng và oi khủng khiếp, vậy mà tôi vẫn tha thẩn ra phố chỉ vì không cưỡng lại được sắc màu quyến rũ muôn hoa những ngày tháng sáu. Cái nắng hầm hập sẵn sàng thiêu đốt mọi thứ, nhưng chính những lúc như thế mới thấy cái diễm phúc quá lớn của việc được sống trong một thành phố nhiều cây xanh. Trong thời đại nhà nhà làm kinh tế, nhiều người cho là không thực tế khi dành đất cho cây cối, nhưng đối với nhiều người Huế, thiên nhiên cũng quan trọng như tiền bạc, là thứ không thể đánh đổi. Xét ở một khía cạnh nào đó, người Huế giống người Nhật ở triết lý cho rằng “… bậc hiền giả chỉ nên để tâm suy nghĩ về cỏ cây mà thôi! Nhớ click vào hình ảnh để thấy phiên bản lớn hơn.

 

Như thể đền bù cho cái nóng chát chúa ấy, những cây phượng khắp thành phố rợp trời hoa đỏ, sâu hun hút. Trời càng gắt thì phượng càng thắm. Phượng thắp sáng thành nội rêu phong, phượng rãi những cánh hoa trong sân thi thố với màu của những ngôi trường hồng, phượng thả mình bên giòng Hương trong veo những ngày nắng hạ và phượng khẽ khàng đứng lặng lẽ trong công viên những buổi chiều tàn. Nội thành là nơi có nhiều phượng nhất. Những con đường dim mát bỗng một ngày sáng bừng lên, trên trời, dưới đất. Hoa phượng, dù rụng xuống, vẫn không hề tả tơi, mà giữ một màu đỏ thắm. Năm nay, phượng không nở đồng loạt, mà như phân công nhau, nhờ thế mà kéo dài suốt mùa hạ. Lúc này đây, đường "phượng bay" chỉ mới chấm phá những tán phượng xen trong lá xanh. Thế nhưng đi sâu vào trong, bên bức tường rêu phủ của những công sở điều hiu lại sáng lên cả một góc trời. Ở Huế, có một cây phượng luôn đúng hẹn. Đó là cây bên sông Hương, cạnh cầu Trường Tiền. Những nhánh phượng chao nghiêng nặng trĩu hoa sà xuống mặt nước hút hồn bao người. Nó may mắn được trồng ở một vị thế quá đẹp. Thiết nghĩ, cây phượng này xứng đáng được đưa vào danh sách những cảnh quan cần bảo vệ . Có cây hoa nào khác đem lại cho người Huế và du khách đến đây nhiều niềm vui hơn?

Đi ngắm phượng lại bất ngờ gặp một nhan sắc khác: Sen.

 

Người ta bảo năm nay sen mất mùa, không còn thấy bán khắp nơi như mọi khi, dù đã sắp đến rằm tháng 7, ngày lễ rất được coi trọng ở Huế, lại rơi đúng vào mùa sen. Những năm trước, vào thời điểm này, nếu đứng trên những chiếc cầu dẫn vào thành nội thì thấy cơ man nào là sen hồng, sen trắng, sen xanh. Nhưng năm nay thì thưa thớt lằm. Vì thế tôi đã ngỡ ngàng biết bao khi tình cờ đi ngang qua cửa Hiển Nhân và bắt gặp một hàng bán sen ngay trên vỉa hè. Không nhiều, chỉ một bó sen trắng, dăm bó sen hồng, nhưng hoa thì tuơi tắn kỳ lạ. Những búp sen căng tròn, mỉm cười e lệ chen chúc trong tán lá xanh non phủ một lớp phấn trắng đục, hoàn toàn khác với những bó sen khô quắt tội nghiệp vì cái nóng bất thường mà tôi thấy trước đó. Chị bán hàng bảo sen này do chị trồng và vừa mới được cắt từ hồ lên. Hèn chi mà tươi rói.

Hoa sen có một vẻ đẹp tinh khiết khó có loài nào bì được. Chỉ cần cắm một chục cành sen, cả căn phòng sẽ thắm một mùi hương thanh cao. Nhớ ngày xưa, mỗi khi mua hoa sen về, bao giờ mẹ tôi cũng giữ lại chiếc lá sen bọc quanh bó hoa để cạnh giường ngủ cho thơm hay cắt tỉa thành chiếc nón xinh xinh để lũ trẻ chúng tôi đội đầu chơi cho mát. Thật thế, thử ép lòng bàn tay vào lá sen mà xem, sẽ thấy một cảm giác mát lạnh tinh khiết. Mùa hạ Huế đẹp có phần cũng nhờ vào những hồ sen rãi khắp thành phố. Mong cho chúng đừng bị lấp đi để xây lên những chiếc hộp nhà xấu xí. Tôi dừng lại mua một bó sen hồng, lòng nhủ lòng hôm sau lại ghé mua một bó sen trắng. Phải mua dần như thế vì hoa sen chỉ chơi được một đêm thôi. Nhớ ngày còn bé, mỗi khi có hoa sen cắm trên bàn thờ, buổi sáng ngủ dậy, việc đầu tiên của tôi là chạy ra chỗ lọ hoa xem hoa nở hay chưa, dù biết chắc là hoa đã nở, vậy mà vẫn háo hức, vẫn mong chờ, lạ thế. Hình như cái vẻ đẹp càng lung linh thì lại lắm kiêu kỳ. Hoa sen chỉ hiến dâng cho người một khoảnh khắt mà thôi. Ngày ấy, mỗi khi cây hoa quỳnh trong vườn sắp nở, tôi vẫn thường chay qua khoe với bà ngoại, dù biết thế nào cũng nghe bà nói “Trồng làm chi loài hoa sớm nở tối tàn.” Thế nhưng với hoa sen, cũng chóng tàn lắm, tôi lại không nghe bà nói thế bao giờ. (Hình như với hoa sen, bà ngoại cũng thiên vị đấy nhé.) Khi ghé lại, tôi còn thấy một thanh niên khác, cũng đang hí hửng cầm lên một bó. Thì ra đó là những đóa sen anh đã đặt chị bán hàng bó vào trong mỗi nụ hoa một nhúm trà từ hôm trước. Sau một đêm, những cánh trà ấy sẽ ướp đầy hương sen. Tôi không có thói quen uống trà, nhưng tôi biết, kiểu ướp trà sen đó ở vùng đất này không phải là cá biệt. Thời đại sống gấp, sống vội vàng, vẫn có một nơi là xứ Huế của tôi, vẫn giữ được phong thái mà người nơi khác thường thắc mắc “Huế ơi! Bao nỗi đoạn trường. Mà sao Huế vẫn phố phường thong dong?”

 

Gần đây, một nhan sắc mới đã xuất hiện ở Huế mà tôi chưa kịp biết tên. Đó là một loài cây thân gỗ cao lớn, lạ thay, lại cho những chuỗi hoa màu vàng chanh tươi tắn mà mong manh. Một lần, lạc vào một con đường nhỏ và ngắn trong nội thành, tôi thấy hai hàng cây hoa này, trong đó một vài cây đã cho lứa hoa đầu, hứa hẹn một con đường độc đáo sắp xuất hiện. Chỉ một vài năm nữa thôi, khi hai hàng cây lớn lên và đồng loạt ra hoa, chắc sẽ đẹp lắm...

Huế đã từng có những con đường chuyên trồng một loài cây như thế, được biết đến trong dân chúng bởi những cái tên biểu cảm như đường Phượng bay, đường Hàng Me, Hàng Đoác, đường lên dốc Nam Giao trước đây thuần chủng một loài thông, rồi con đườg Long não “hàng cây lá xanh gần với nhau” Lê Lợi, Nguyễn Trường Tộ, đường Mù u ở Văn Thánh. Tiếc là những cái tên đó đã dần phôi phai. Đôi khi tôi nghĩ, tại sao những cái tên hay như thế lại bị hất hủi để nhận lấy những tên đường nơi đâu cũng có? Tôi nhớ thành phố Telluride ở Colorado mà mình có dịp ghé qua, cũng có những con đường mang tên loài cây rất ấn tượng như đường Fur, đường Oak, đường Pine, v.v. Những cái tên ấy gợi lên một xúc cảm khác biệt, có khả năng khơi dậy trí tưởng tượng và tò mò, thúc những bước chân hối hả đến với ý nghĩ rằng ở đó có cây sồi, hay một hàng thông chẳng hạn. Tại sao không tạo ra một sự khác biệt, làm cho mình độc đáo và vì thế mà người khác nhớ lâu. Tôi đã háo hức, vui mừng biết bao khi đọc trên báo lời kiến nghị đặt tên cho một số con đường ở Đà Lạt bằng tên các loài hoa. Và sau đó tôi cũng đã thất vọng chừng ấy khi nghe chính quyền thành phố thẳng thừng từ chối. Một thành phố mệnh danh là xứ sở của các loài hoa, là thành phố của mùa xuân vĩnh hằng, đến kỳ vẫn tôn vinh hoa với lễ hội tầm cỡ hái ra tiền lại hắt hủi những cái tên hoa? Đôi khi, làm đẹp một thành phố, tạo cho nó một nét riêng có cá tính cũng không khó lắm đâu. Chỉ cần một ý tưởng độc đáo và sự dũng cảm để đeo đuổi ý tưởng đó đến cùng…

"I Give Myself To You!"

That’s what Diem Phung Thi said at the ceremony when she donated many of her sculptures to her beloved hometown of Hue. The beautiful colonial building on the corner of Phan Boi Chau and Ngo Quyen Streets is where she worked, displayed her works and spent her last days on earth. Diem Phung Thi was born in picturesque Chau E outside Hue City. She then followed her father to live on the central highland and went back to Hue to attend Dong Khanh, a famous all-girls’ school. She was trained to become a dentist in Hanoi and then later in France. But her life took a dramatic turn one day when she dropped by the studio of a famous sculptor and happened to collect the bits and pieces dumped by the artist. To a normal person, those pieces mean nothing, but for a great mind like hers, they can make miracles. She selected seven of the pieces and named them the seven modules, just like the seven musical notes from which endless numbers of melodies are composed. In the same way, the seven modules, which seem meaningless when standing alone, put together, produced hundreds of sculptures. Her name was soon noticed and many of her works are reproduced to be displayed in the open air all over France. Diem Phung Thi was even mentioned in the acclaimed Larousse Dictionary of the Art.

 

Towards the end of her life, Diem decided to bring all her works back to Vietnam and donated most of them to her hometown, Hue. She herself also came back to live in this house and gave sculpture lessons to unfortunate children. It’s in Hue where she found some other materials for her later works such as canvas, paper and banana leaf.

Some questions came up in my mind when I visited the museum. Why 38 of her sculptures have appeared in France, but not in Vietnam yet, except the one at her grave near Khai Dinh Tomb, (and another at a small cemetery in a small district of Thua Thien-Hue)? Why are many of her wonderful sculptures still kept in the warehouse? What's the second floor of the building for?

Following Diem Phung Thi, Le Ba Dang came back and another beautiful villa was granted to him to house his  art works on Le Loi St. How about Trinh Cong Son? He was too famous to be ignored. And he’s from Hue.

Hue Festival 2008 _ A Glimspe

As planned, Hue Festival took place in the first week of June.

This beautiful boat is getting ready for the program called Legends of the Perfume River. The boat, which is 6.5m wide and 27m long, is modeled after the one for the kings in the past. Originally the royal boat was of two floors but, according to the designers, the bridges spanning the Perfume River today are too low for that height. The boat has room for 100 people and will be accompanied by a team of dragon boats on a journey from Minh Mang Tomb to Phu Van Lau. Tales are told on the way.

  
From Truong Tien Bridge, the pedestrian street Nguyen Dinh Chieu looks more vivid with the comics in the outdoor exhibition Mat Ke (Faces Tell). The paintings mirror themselves on the river. Notice the prize flamboyant flower tree which is, without fail, in full bloom every summer. That is absolutely the most beautiful flamboyant tree in Hue.

These horses in front of Saigon Morin Hotel catch the attention of thousands of people waiting at the traffic lights near Truong Tien Bridge. And this one is galloping across the citadel. They are all made of plastic bags.

Festivals come and go but these remain. The launch of the drinking water fountains and the area maps for tourists come so quietly but bring back a significant benefit for the community. In an attempt of supplying pure water for the community, the city finally has the fountains installed on different locations around Hue City. The water is filtered and pure enough to drink. The area maps provide information about places of interest in the area. Wish these projects, which are for the community, are well protected by the community.

(For ref: The round white fountain is located in the park right in front of College of Education and the red brick one is one of the two at Phu Van Lau. There is another, dual, inside the Children House, and a "bear paw", the name of the fountain, in the park in front of Hai Ba Trung High School, too.)

Lotuses in Bloom

 

 
If you come to visit Hue City on these days, you’ll spot pink lotuses everywhere, floating on the river, dancing up on Truong Tien Bridge and dangling on trees alongside the main streets throughout the city. No, it’s not summer yet, the season when lotuses are in full bloom. It’s the decoration for the Buddha’s Birthday (Le Phat Dan) which takes place every year in lunar April. In a city where 80% of the inhabitants are Buddhists and Buddhism followers and with more than 100 pagodas, that this day is celebrated more energetically in Hue is no surprise. This year, the event becomes even more important while Vietnam is hosting the United Nations Day of Vesak. This is also considered one of the pre-Hue Festival activities which will take place in the first week of June. Click on each photo to see its  larger version.

The beautiful Perfume River becomes more splendid with the seven giant silk lotuses arranged in the middle of the river, right in front of Phu Van Lau with the imposing flag tower on the background. At night, the light lit inside make them stand out in the dark, which attract thousands of admirers.

Le Loi Street, one of the nicest streets in Hue is decorated with these gates made of hundreds of silk lotuses. Those are to welcome the parade which will happen on the 14th night starting from ancient Dieu De Pagoda to Tu Dam in the area of Nam Giao. This parade, called Ruoc Phat, is actually not new to this Buddhist center but has been just revived.

Buddhism is an integral part of Hue culture. One can never understand the culture of Hue fully if one lacks the basic knowledge of Buddhism. Many Hue people still keep strictly the customs originated from Buddhism; eating vegetarian food on full-moon days is an example. Buddha’s Birthday is among very few occasions when people in the city decorate their houses with flags and lanterns. Hue is famous for its peaceful life and Hue inhabitants possess some unique characters. It’s Buddhism that explains a great part of the story.

What does the Citadel look like at night?

Royal Night (Dem Hoang Cung) has just resumed after the long and weary days of winter and yesterday was its first night of the month. For those who have never heard of it, Royal Night is the name of a program intended for tourists who want to know what the life inside the Citadel was like.

Unfortunately, we were a little bit late. When we arrived, people had been inside. From afar, well-lit Ngo Mon looked brilliant. At the entrance in the middle stood the guards in uniform who directed us to enter through the one on the right. It was the right thing that people should do though, out of respect for the King. (In the old days, that entrance was reserved for the Emperor only.) In a broader sense, that practice symbolically shows the discipline of a society.

Along the sides of Trung Dao Bridge stood girls in ao dai holding silk lanterns leading us to Thai Hoa Palace. The atmosphere was even more inviting and stimulating in the sounds of drums and the sight of unicorn dancing.

This is the band playing court music with Thai Hoa Palace in the background. In the picture is the dance Nu tuong xuat quan which portrayed the sisters Trung Trac and Trung Nhi, the two heroines of Vietnam who were up against the enemy from the North. Though defeated in the end, they became Vietnamese women’s source of pride. It was my regret that Thai Hoa Palace was closed to tourists at night.

This is the replica of the royal seal on display in front of the ruins of Can Chanh Palace where the King actually lived. Nothing of it remains but it’s siad that a plan for reviving this most important residence of the citadel is on its way. The area was then hosting the royal dinner.

The Mieu was probably the most magnificent sight of all. The gilt palace looked splendid at night. As you may already know, it is the place where the 13 Kings of the Nguyen Dynasty are worshiped. Visitors were guided to pay homage to the Kings at an altar set up in front of the palace. Inside were the 13 altars for the 13 Kings.

Royal games were reproduced in Dien Tho Palace. Actually the rules and the games themselves were simplified to suit people today. These men were giving away letter drawings (calligraphy). You may as well  ask them to write your name but I was too late to ask for one. But you can buy them here from these people instead.

Truong Lang was decorated with photos by the well-known photographer and Hue native Dao Hoa Nu. They were really amazing.

Of course, it is far from the whole story and a show is just a show. Yet the program is successful in that it adds another dimension to the beauty of the Citadel at night: unique, charming and mysterious.

Thien Mu Pagoda in Springtime

I went to Thien Mu Pagoda on the first day of the new lunar year, (called Tet in Vietnam,) with a vague fright that I would see a different pagoda after the 3- year-long repair. Fortunately I was wrong. The pagoda had been returned to its original beauty and I think the workmen should be given credit for the good work. The fact that Thien Mu Pagoda is the oldest national pagoda in Hue which received the support from the royal courts and has experienced repair many times and changed in the process certainly makes it really hard for today’s workers in deciding which version to follow. The repair also revived the two shrines on campus, one for Dia Tang Bo Tat and the other for Quan The Am Bo Tat, which for a long time had been closed to visitors due to their poor condition. So from now on visitors can see the whole pagoda as it used to be. If you click on each picture, you'll see its full-sized version.

The unusual and prolonged cold spell couldn’t prohibit visitors from streaming to pagoda with cameras in hands and eagerness on faces. They came to admire the exceptional beauty of a very Vietnamese pagoda and for peaceful moments in hearts. The pagoda was brightened up with spring flowers though young buds had not appeared yet on old trees. But it was the leafless branches that added another dimension to its beauty.

Much has been written about this well-known pagoda and I don’t mean to recount its  long history. The following is just for those who have never seen the pagoda and want to come.

- Some visitors inquire about the names Thien Mu and Linh Mu. At the beginning, there had been a very small pagoda in the area. In 1601, Nguyen Hoang had the pagoda rebuilt on Ha Khe Hill and named it Thien Mu, which literally means Heavenly Lady after the folk tale widely known at the time about an old lady in red who appeared now and then at night and said there would soon be a man who would come and build a pagoda in the place and that the country would be prosperous since then. Later on, in Tu Duc’s time, the king himself didn’t have children. As an homage to Heaven in praying for a son, the king banned any name containing the word Thien meaning Heaven. Thien Mu then became Linh Mu, Sacred Lady. That’s why the two names are in use today.

- Besides Vong Canh Hill, Thien Mu Pagoda is the other ideal place to admire Perfume River.

- Visitors to the pagoda likely notice an old car on display. That’s Thich Quang Duc’s, a monk from Thien Mu Pagoda, who drove to Saigon and burnt himself as resistance to the then-government. The fire burnt his body but his heart came intact, which is now kept in Xa Loi Pagoda in Saigon.

- Near the car is the miniature rock (hon non bo) of Dao Tan, the father of Tuong, (a type of Vietnamese ancient drama.)

- At the back of the pagoda there is a tortoise of rock. The folk tale is that as soon as the pagoda was completed, a giant tortoise appeared from the river and crawled across the pagoda to the lake behind but it was stricken to death by thunder and lightning and turned to rock. Historians today attribute it to Feng shui.

- Phuoc Duyen Tower is almost closed. In the past, the key was kept by the Court. It’s because of the gold statues on top of the tower.

- Personally, I like the statues of Than Kim Cang at the gate to Dai Hung Temple for their symbolic significance. One must be good and well-behaved to be admitted to the sacred pagoda.

Bridge of Love…

Is the name I give to the covered bridges I know…

1. Lai Vien Kieu in Hoi An is, without doubt, the most renowned bridge of the type in the country, better known to the locals as Cau Nhat Ban (Janpanese Bridge) or Chua Cau (Pagoda Bridge.) The bridge itself is a perfect example of the combination of the Japanese and Vietnamese architectures, simple but elegant. From afar, it looks like a cosy house with pink walls and a roof made of dark green tiles shining up in the sun. People in Hoi An believe their bridge is connected with a myth about a monster called con Cù. Its giant body spreads across various countries with its head in Japan, its tail in India, and its body in Hoi An. Because of its giant size, if it turned, then Japan would shake with earthquakes; Hoi An and India would suffer in the process. Therefore the bridge was built as a curse on the monster keeping it from turning hence ensuring peaceful lives for the three countries. The story sounds mythical but humane. In this sense, it is the bridge that saves the countries. At the time, many Japanese people settled down in Hoi An where they did business for their living. Chua Cau was, for them, a national embodiment of their fatherland. If you click on each pic, you'll see its full-sized version.

 

2. Born and raised in Hue but not until recently have I seen the well-known bridge mentioned in the popular folk song “Ai ve cau ngoi Thanh Toan, cho em ve voi mot doan cho vui…” The bridge is located in rustic Thanh Toan Village, around 7 km from the city of Hue. The modest name Cau Ngoi Thanh Toan in itself evokes the image of a bridge with a tiled roof to distiguish from other bridges. Although Thanh Toan Bridge was not the only covered bridge in and around ancient Hue, it was different in that while the others were mainly for decorative purposes, the ones in the Citadel, for example, Thanh Toan Bridge has dual commitments, for transport and shelter. Spanning a small creek, which is full of water in the rainny season, but often runs dry in the summer. It’s said that Lady Hoang Thi Dao, a native of the village and wife of a wealthy mandarin in the court of King Le Hien Tong, donated money to have this bridge built for charity purpose. Stepping on the bridge, visitors soon feel relaxed. Of note are the two long wooden pedestals running along both sides of the bridge serving as benches for passers-by. After buying food from the village market nearby, people could stop at the bridge, sit on the benches, enjoy breezes from the creek or converse. Though fishing isn’t my hobby, I imagine it is perfect for fishing, (if there are fish in there). Later, a small shrine was added on the bridge in dedication to Lady Dao. The curved bridge looks both rustic and royal. When I came, a small building was being constructed just a short distance from the bridge, which was to house farming tools on display. When finished, that gallery would make the journey to Thanh Toan Bridge complete. Visitors can buy things  from the market and learn how villagers work with their tools.

 

3. If the bridge in Hoi An is a sacred place soaked with the love for the country, the bridge outside Hue is the one of love for the people, then the covered bridge in far-away Madison County depicted in my all-time favorite movie The Bridges of Madison County is the one of romantic love. The red, solid-looking bridge standing out in the field of wild flowers witnesses the love of rugged photographer Robert and Francesca with passion, happiness, disappointment and death...

 

The three different bridges in the three areas may look very different and serve various purposes but share one thing in common: human love.

 

 

Minh Mang Tomb

Visitors to Hue with a tight schedule tend to skip Minh Mang Tomb due to its far-away location. But to me, among the 7 royal tombs in Hue, it is the most rewarding one to visit. Of course, I don't at all deny the truth that the tomb is a long distance from the city but today, with better transporting facilities, it is quite accessible even by motorbike. The ferry crossing has long become unecessary with the presence of Tuan  Bridge and the new (and beautiful, too) paved road shortens the distance considerably. What is more, taking the road, tourists are rewarded with picturesque scenes on the way. They'll pass lovely garden houses in famous Nam Giao area, which is known as the Land of Meditation of Hue.  They'll experience a little bit of highland Dalat  with hills of pine trees, (but not the climate.) Then they'll gaze at rural scenes with neat paddy fields and sugar cane fields. The scenes from the bridge is amazing, too. To put it in a nutshell, keep in mind that the prejudice against the transportation from the city there is now a thing of the past.

As is common, as soon as getting the throne, kings in the East thought about building for themselves eternal residences since they believed in the afterlife. For the kings, death is not the end. Those who think tombs are usually synonymous with mourning and depression, when visiting royal tombs in Hue, may be stricken by flower gardens for walks, woods for hunting, lakes for fishing and boating, theatre for performances, small huts for writing poetry, etc. Visiting royal tombs in Hue, people don't have any frightening feeling of death, neither do they feel small as they do before something giant and imposing. But they feel at home. As an Western tourist said, the royal tombs in Hue are a place where "le deuil sourit et la joie soupire" (nơi tang tóc mỉm cười và vui tươi thổn thức".)* Charles Patris once wrote in a poem that "...Ces rois d'Annam tres sages. Qui font sourir la mort." (Các nhà vua Nguyễn khôn ngoan. Làm cho cái cảnh tóc tang biết cười.")** (Did you feel it ever, my friends?) Minh Mang was no exception. He sent experts on feng-sui to go looking for a suitable place for his tomb as early as 1826. But prudent as he was, the king didn't decide on the location and the plan until 14 years later. The actual construction began in Sept 1840 but he passed away suddenly the next year while the tomb was unfinished. One month after Minh Mang's death, his son, Thieu Tri King, continued the construction strictly following his father's plan.

Because of that, each tomb is the reflection of its owner's characteristics and personality and visitors can  easily notice it. Minh Mang's contribution was evident. The country was at its best during the reign of the king. He was laudable as a man of knowledge, honesty, intelligence and straightforwardness. And all his virtues are shown through the organization of the tomb. Unlike Tu Duc Tomb and the others where structures are dotted here and there, Minh Mang Tomb abides by strictly symmetric rules. What I like best about this tomb is the fact that all the main structures are deliberately arranged in a deep line, as long as 700m from the gate to the grave. It reminds the image of a lying man stretching his body with his head pillowing on a hill. And because of that special structure, as soon as you pass one monument,

there opens up another, each time with a different view, which brings you from surprise to surprise. It is just like a story with chapters and the last one was the king's grave behind the two bronze locked  doors. The symmetry is softened with the romantic views of pine trees, lotus lakes and flowers beds. I remember saying I am not much of a symmetry fan but to Minh Mang Tomb, I really am.

       Mưa Buồn, Mưa Vui

Hôm nay Huế mưa...

Cái cảm xúc khi nhìn ngắm những cơn mưa, đặc biệt là những cơn mưa đầu mùa như chiều nay, sẽ mãi trinh nguyên trong tôi. Mùa hạ Huế, mưa đến bất ngờ, hầu như không bao giờ báo trước. Có thể khởi đầu là một ngày nóng hầm hập, đột nhiên trời dịu xuống, lãng đãng một chút, âm u một chút và... mưa. Cũng có thể buổi tối lên giường, miệng lầm bầm than vãn vì nóng, gần sáng bỗng thấy mình lò mò kéo tấm chăn mỏng đắp vội lên người và sáng ra thức dậy trong những âm thanh nửa chừng quen, nửa chừng lạ, bỗng ngạc nhiên và hí hửng “Ồ, té ra trời mưa!”. Không tỉ tê như những cơn mưa mùa đông thường thấy, mưa đầu mùa xối xả hả hê, cũng có khi ầm ầm giông bão. Cây cỏ vui mừng nhảy múa và lòng người rộn ràng. Tôi thích ngắm những cơn mưa đầu mùa vì có một cái gì đó rất lạ; nó mãnh liệt và ấn tượng. (Có phải vì là cơn mưa được chờ đợi quá lâu?) Và tôi tự hỏi phải chăng Trịnh Công Sơn muốn nói đến những cơn mưa này khi có lần bảo “nắng buồn hơn mưa”? Tôi thích nhìn những cơn mưa như thế từ khung của sổ, nơi có treo chiếc phong linh ít khi vang vì thiếu gió, bỗng ngân lên chiều nay như muốn thi thố cùng cơn mưa ngoài kia. Khi mưa tạnh, không khí trở nên tinh khiết. Phóng xe ra phố sau cơn mưa, bầu trời trong hơn, không khí loãng ra và mọi vật trở nên thánh thiện. Bụi bặm và những sân si của trần gian hình như bị xóa hết. Vì thế, tôi thích gọi những cơn mưa đầu mùa ở Huế là mưa tẩy trần. Và tôi nghĩ, trong đời người, thỉnh thoảng cũng cần những cơn mưa tẩy trần như thế...

Rồi sau đó, những tháng cuối năm sẽ là tiếng thở dài của những cơn mưa mùa đông da diết. Mùa đông Huế lạnh và mưa tí tách, tỉ tê từng giọt, từng giọt như cà phê trong phin. Và gió, và lạnh liu xiu. Những người từ nơi khác đến thăm Huế thường than thở về những cơn mưa âm ỉ, nào là buồn, nào là chán. Điều đó không sai khi cơn mưa dầm đã phá hỏng hoàn toàn kỳ nghỉ của họ. Điều đó không sai trong một thành phố lắm cây xanh và nhiều kiến trúc cổ. Cái màu nâu cũ trên những bức tường rêu phong trong mưa trở nên đậm hơn và sâu hơn. Cây lá trong mưa gió nhìn ủ rủ và đìu hiu hơn. Hay là vì đặc điểm của xứ này, hễ mưa xuống là lạnh, là gió, là kéo dài, nên làm mủi lòng bao người? Nhưng tôi, một người sống ở Huế, thì lại thấy nỗi u hoài của mưa Huế thanh thoát và tinh khiết. Có bao giờ bạn bạo dạn đi dạo dưới mưa để được mưa vỗ về? Hãy thử một lần xem. Còn nếu sợ ướt và lạnh, ghé vào một quán cà phê ấm cúng nào đấy có nhạc nhè nhẹ, đủ để vẫn còn nghe tiếng mưa ngoài song, hay ở nhà cuộn mình trong chăn ấm hoặc ngồi bên của sổ nhìn mưa, nghe Mưa Hồng của Trịnh hay đọc sách, thật chẳng có gì bằng.

Mà suy cho cùng, mưa không buồn, mưa cũng chẳng vui. Chẳng qua là do lòng người đó thôi...

Tôi đi Bạch Mã về, cảm xúc mơ hồ và nhạt nhòa. Một chút háo hức của Xuân Diệu “Em ! anh đi núi về. Đầu còn ngân gió núi. Dạ còn vang nắng ngàn. Giọng còn pha tiếng suối.” Một chút ngúng nguẩy của Phan Thị Vàng Anh “Nếu tao là Nhà nước...” Người nhà hỏi “Bạch Mã đẹp không?” Tôi trả lời: “Muốn nếm không khí mát lạnh và trong lành của vùng ôn đới, muốn nhấm nháp vị yên tĩnh vi vu của núi rừng thì đi. Còn nếu trong trí tưởng tượng là một thiên đường hoa lung linh hay những biệt thự mơ màng trong sương sớm thì... ở nhà đọc sách báo viết về Bạch Mã!” Đừng quên nhấp vào hình để thấy phiên bản lớn hơn.

Bạch Mã mùa hè có khí hậu thật lý tưởng, (tất nhiên là không dành cho những ai sợ lạnh.) Đường lên Bạch Mã quanh co và có vẻ hơi chật chội, chỉ đủ cho một chiều xe ô tô lên hoặc xuống. Nếu rủi xe bạn đang lên mà gặp một xe xuống ngược chiều thì thật là tai họa. Những lúc như thế, nhường nhau một chút là chuyện thường tình, nhưng ngặt nỗi khá nguy hiểm vì đường quá hẹp. Bên này là vách núi, bên kia là vực sâu, cây cối dày đặc. Lang can ngăn cách hầu như không có, hoặc có mà như không, vì có nơi chỉ là một sợi dây vải mỏng manh chẳng biết có công dụng gì. (Kỳ cục!) Bạch Mã tiêu biểu cho kiểu rừng mưa nhiệt đới, tầng tầng lớp lớp và ẩm ướt, ngay cả trong mùa hè. Buổi sáng sương giăng mờ lối và có vẻ như con đường mòn lên núi cứ ướt và trơn trượt như thế suốt ngày, dù trời đang nắng. Mùi ẩm mốc của lá rừng ngai ngái. Không khí ẩm là điều kiện cho các loài côn trùng sinh sống. Nếu không cẩn thận, bạn có thể bị vắt bám.

 

Khi tôi đến, những ngôi nhà bằng đá tảng màu xanh xám quạnh hiu đang ánh lên trong nắng chiều le lói. Ở độ cao trên 900m, dù đang muà hè, khi nhiệt độ ở trung tâm thành phố Huế có lúc lên đến 40 độ thì ở Bạch Mã chỉ từ 18 đến 23 độ. Bạch Mã làm tôi nhớ lắm những ngày vô tư lự ở Telluride. Cũng đồi núi, rừng cây, cũng khe nước dài chảy róc rách len lỏi qua những tảng đá, cũng không khí trong lành và mát lạnh, chỉ có điều khô ráo hơn...

Sau đoạn đường quanh co, chúng tôi lên đến đỉnh. Ở đó có Vọng hải đài tắm trong nắng chiều. Một cảnh quang thoáng đãng hiện ra. Có vẻ bầu trời như bao la hơn từ trên ấy. Những nhánh lau trắng rung rung trong gió. Đứng ở đây, có thể nhìn thấy một bên là đầm Cầu Hai từ phía xa xa một màu trắng xoá, bên kia là cây cối dày đặc. Bạch Mã về đêm heo hút. Trăng sáng và gần hơn. Đứng trên cao nhìn khu rừng dày âm u, tự hỏi trong đó có những gì?

Buổi sáng dậy sớm một mình tản bộ quanh quẩn Bạch Mã lúc còn mờ sương giăng để thỏa mãn thói quen cố hữu, thích lang thang một mình. Những tán rừng che phủ làm cho mặt đất thoáng vẻ âm u và thanh vắng. Chim hót và côn trùng vi vu. Đã lâu lắm rồi mới có lại được cảm giác yên bình này. Và tôi thích lắm những giây phút như thế. Không suy nghĩ, không vướng bận bất cứ một điều gì. Chỉ có tiếng bước chân mình khẽ bước trong thinh không, chẳng hề có khái niệm là mình đang đi đâu và sẽ thấy điều gì ở phía trước.

Vậy mà khi đi gần đến khu nhà ăn bỗng nghe tiếng hát karaoke từ xa vọng tới. Hụt hẫng một lúc. Ai lại lên đây để hát karaoke chứ. Chắc thú rừng cũng sợ mà chạy đi mất. Đổi hướng khác, đi một đoạn, thấy tấm bảng ghi biệt thự với một cái tên thật lãng mạn. Ngôi nhà nằm khuất sau hàng cây và bậc cấp cao bằng đá. Nghĩ mình sẽ được thấy một ngôi nhà thật đẹp nên dụng công leo lên. Nhưng rồi thất vọng khi thấy đó chỉ là một kiến trúc xấu xí. Thất thểu chạy xuống như bị ai đuổi. Đâu rồi 139 khu biệt thự xinh đẹp và đầy đủ chợ búa, bưu điện? Và sao không có những khóm hoa? Với khí hậu lý tưởng thế này, lại đang là mùa hè, gieo vài ngọn cỏ, trồng vài luống hoa mà khó vậy sao? Vậy mà... Tội nghiệp cho trí tưởng tượng nhiều chuyện của tôi đã vội vẽ nên một thiên đường hoa lá. Dù biết rằng làm du lịch ở Bạch Mã là một bài toán khó vì mùa đông mưa lạnh và kéo dài, từ tháng 9 cho đến tháng 1 năm sau, với lượng mưa lớn nhất Việt Nam. Đó là mùa hiu quạnh. Nhưng đến đây, tôi vẫn không tránh khỏi cảm giác thấy Bạch Mã như một đứa trẻ đang ngủ say bị đánh thức và vì còn ngái ngủ, nên chỉ một lát sau, thấy không ai quan tâm, lăn đùng ra ngủ tiếp...

Rời Bạch Mã, ấn tượng còn lại trong tôi là buổi sáng dậy sớm trong bầu không khí trong lành, (vì ngủ không được, do lạ chỗ.) Phòng tôi có 6 người. 3 kẻ ham chơi thì đã dậy sớm leo núi đón bình minh, 2 tên còn say giấc nồng. Việc đầu tiên tôi làm là với tay mở toang cánh cửa sổ cạnh giường cho thiên nhiên tràn vào và cứ thế ngắm những chú bướm nhỏ xinh xinh màu trắng sữa đang đậu khắp sàn nhà bằng gỗ, đậu cả trên những tấm nệm làm giường ngủ, trên ba lô của tôi, im lặng. Hương núi rừng lan tỏa. Tinh khiết đến đê mê. Và đó sẽ là cảm giác làm tôi nhớ mãi...

Wandering Souls

If you happen to visit Hue during the period of May 23 to 31 (according to lunnar calendar), you may see small altars in front of houses here and there every afternoon and feel the fragrance of incense floating in rare summer breezes. They are set up to remember those innocent people who were killed in a historical event called “That thu Kinh do” (The Fall of the Imperial Capital) dated back to 1885. Due to the lingering conflicts between the Hue imperial court (Trieu dinh Hue) and the French envoys, on the night of May 23rd, Ton That Thuyet, the minister of war, and his men intended to attack General de Courcy and French soldiers while they were on their way back from a ball crossing Thanh Long Bridge. But for some reasons, the actual attack didn’t take place until later that night. (Hence the nick name Pont de L'Attentat _ Cau Muu Sat.) At about 2a.m., fast sleeping people were suddenly woken up by the deafening sounds of cannons. The envoy’s residence and Mang Ca Post were simultaneously attacked. It was a fight of heroism against unjustice but unfortunately an unequal battle as well. Ton That Thuyet’s soldier’s bravery couldn’t compete with French soldiers who were more in population and better equipped. The worst thing was that many innocent men living within the walled imperial city were killed while trying to escape though the gates. The narrow streets in the imperial city were full of dead bodies which later were burried collectively at Ba Don area near Ngu Binh Mountain. The ill-fated victims have been called wandering souls since then.

Vietnamese people worship the dead. So a temple named   Mieu Am Hon (Temple of Wandering Souls) was soon built on the corner of  Mai Thuc Loan and Le Thanh Ton streets to honor those unfortunate fates. Every year on the occasion, a formal ceremony is carried out there. The habit soon spread to all the houses in the city. Each family choses a convenient time between May 23 and 31 and carries out a similar anniversary at home in the open air. They do this with great respect and mixed feelings. They are proud of heroic Ton That Thuyet, who dared to make a violent reaction to the arrogant French envoys. But they also feel painful for the poor and dependent situation at the time of the imperial court. Offerings are usually something that can be taken away with, (just like food to go.) Besides such indispensable dishes as boiled sticky rice, chè and fruits, there are simple things such as boiled sweet potatoes, manioc, corns (on the cob), boiled ground nuts and even cooked rice compressed into globes. After the ceremony, part of the food is given to children, usually poor and curious street ones who happen to pass by during the time. People tend to believe that those children are embodiment of wandering souls and call them living souls. Giving them food is just like giving those wandering dead souls. It is like charity of some sort.  Hue locals like to see their charity imbedded with religion and beliefs.

But the ceremony I was invited to recently was a special one because it was not on land, but on a boat, exactly a double dragon boat, the type for tourists on Perfume River. Every year, a group of sellers at Dong Ba Market gather on this occasion and do the ceremony on the boat. The boat started late afternoon from a wharf in Gia Hoi. When I stepped on the boat, there had been tens of men, women and children and a group of monks come from Tra Am Pagoda. An altar had been set up with the offerings arranged neatly on the tables waiting. At around 5p.m., the boat started up, went under Gia Hoi Bridge, passed Dong Ba Market and under Truong Tien Bridge. We visitors all sat at the two ends of the boat enjoying cool summer breezes from the river and gazed at the beautiful sights passing by. Things look much better  from the river. (By the way, I see many tourists take the dragon tour at night listening to Hue folk songs but to me, it is much wiser to start the river trip earlier in the afternoon so that you can admire both the sights along the river and the night scenes on the way back.) Everything were fine except for the noises that the boat engine made. (If only the boat didn’t have it!) After passing Thien Mu Pagoda, the boat stopped and was anchored at the middle of the river. That is the largest and most beautiful part of the river with Thien Mu Tower and Van Thanh in front, mountains on the left shining up in dying sunbeams. Things became pleasantly quiet. Fresh air, murmuring breezes and sacred atmosphere. The  ceremony began with the monks in yellow blouses chanting and other people in grey kneeling down in front of the altar. The river, the boat, the altar and the sounds of chanting and small bells floated on the river creating a unique scene. Toward the end of the ceremony, living fishes and the like were released into the water. The boat then headed toward the river bank so that the paper offerings could be burnt. After that the boat went back to the middle of the river and stopped there again. People all sat down on the wooden floor and enjoyed the vegetarian food. Dinner finished as night fell down, dark enough for the final (and the most interesting) part of the ceremony. Hundreds of paper colorful lanterns in lotus shape were released one by one by the people on the boat. Before lowering a lantern onto the river, each one made a secret wish. Each lantern was for a wish and you may release as many lanterns as the wishes you had. The lanterns drifted away with the wind. A large section of the river was soon lightened up in various colors creating a magnificent sence.

The boat started its journey back while people were releasing the lanterns. The city of Hue appeared again, now in colored lights. People came back home feeling warm at heart with the belief that they had just done something good and significant for those wandering souls. And I did, too.

Vui Vui (1)

Độ sau này tự nhiên xuất hiện nhiều quán ăn và quán cafe mang tên Em và Tôi. Có vẻ như là kể từ sau khi bài hát Em và Tôi của Thanh Tùng xuất hiện thì phải. Một version khác là You and I. Cái này có thể là bản dịch của Em và Tôi, mà cũng có thể là từ You and I của Scorpions chăng? Nhìn chung, những cái tên này cũng hay hay, cũng tình tứ và lãng mạn. Và mới đây một chiều, tình cờ phát hiện một phiên bản khác. Và nó là đây:

 

Chỉ tình cờ đi ngang, chưa ghé vào, vì quán này là một căn nhà phố ở đường Huỳnh Thúc Kháng, hơi chật chội, không hợp gu quán cafe của tôi lắm. (Tôi thích những quán cafe thoáng đãng, thiên nhiên hơn.)

Nhưng dù sao cũng cám ơn chủ quán vì... đã khiến tôi cười...

Street Arts

Festival Nghề Truyền Thống Huế (Festival of Traditional Careers**) took place early June when I was at my busiest time and that’s why I couldn’t see much as expected. As soon as I managed to find some time for a picture-taking tour around the city on this special occasion, my camera died down. (Sorry for not being able to take more pictures of my favorite red dragonflies and others.) Three days of Festival passed so fast and everything disappeared as quickly but these trash carts remain. This  is the picture of trash carts lined up waiting for duty at dusk taken by my friend months ago and this is how those trash carts look today. (Thank you D for the shot.) It is a change for the better, huh? The idea of decorating the trash carts in Hue with graffiti art is fascinating. Hope to see more carts like that in and around the city so that graffiti can resume its truest sense. As always, click on each picture to see a larger version.

The carts with graffiti art excited me as much as Le Ba Dang Art Center disappointed me. Days before the festival, while jogging along the river at  night, I was so happy to see the artist himself and his men meticulously decorating part of  Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street along the beautiful Huong river, the only road for pedestrians in Hue. They carved the street and make mosaic pictures after his well-known motifs. I was glad because it meant pedestrians would soon have something to see walking on the road. I guessed the artists were in a hurry for the coming festival because I saw them working even at night. But you know what I finally saw at the festival. A large piece of blue cloth blanketed that part of the street together with unfinished works covered with dull sand and... with shame. Worse still, after the festival, the blanket was still there and I saw nobody continue with the project. I know the Le Ba Dang Art Center has thousands of reasons for this delay but for a layman like me, it was simply awful planning. Such a famous name should have worked differently. I pray I won’t have to wait until Hue Festival 2008 to see those mosaics on Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street.

** Festival nghề truyền thống Huế took place every two years, alternating with Hue Festival. This time, the festival honored the three traditional careers: bronze sculpture, carving and jewelry making.
